Counselling FAQ’s
Costs, Sessions & What to Expect
If you’re considering counselling, you may have questions about costs, sessions, and what to expect. Below are answers to common questions about counselling at our practice in Warwick, serving Perth’s northern suburbs.
Pricing
How much does counselling cost in Perth?
Counselling fees in Perth can vary depending on the practitioner and type of service. At our Warwick practice, our session fees are:
- Individual counselling: $145 for a 50‑minute session
- Couples counselling: $195 per session for a 50‑minute session
We have intentionally priced our services to remain affordable without requiring a Mental Health Care Plan or GP referral. Many clients choose private counselling because it allows them to begin support quickly, without delay or added appointments.
Do I need a Mental Health Care Plan to see a counsellor?
No. You do not need a Mental Health Care Plan or referral to book counselling with us.
We do not offer Medicare rebates or bulk‑billing under Mental Health Care Plans. Instead, our services are provided on a private‑fee basis, allowing clients to access counselling immediately without visiting a GP first. Our fees are set with this in mind, so clients can receive professional support without needing Medicare involvement.
If you’re unsure whether counselling is right for you, we’re always happy to answer questions before you book.
Do you offer Medicare or private health insurance rebates?
We do not process Medicare rebates, HICAPS, or on‑the‑spot private health insurance claims.
Some private health funds may allow clients to independently submit receipts for reimbursement for counselling services. If you plan to do this, we recommend checking directly with your insurer to confirm eligibility and rebate amounts. While we can provide a receipt upon request, we are unable to submit claims or process rebates on your behalf.
How do payments work?
Payment is required on the day of your appointment. A valid card is required to be kept on file to secure your booking and is used in accordance with our cancellation policy.
Why choose private counselling?
Many clients choose private counselling because it:
- Allows immediate access to support
- Removes the need for GP appointments or referrals
- Offers greater flexibility and privacy
- Avoids session limits associated with Medicare plans
Services
What issues can counselling help with?
Counselling can support people experiencing many different challenges. Common reasons people seek counselling include anxiety, stress, relationship difficulties, life transitions, grief, self-esteem concerns, and feeling overwhelmed. Counselling provides a safe, confidential space to talk openly and explore practical strategies for managing emotions and improving wellbeing. Whether you are facing a specific challenge or simply want to better understand yourself, counselling can help you gain clarity and develop healthier ways of coping.
Do you offer couples counselling?
Yes, we offer couples counselling for partners who want to improve communication, rebuild trust, or work through relationship challenges. Couples counselling provides a neutral and supportive environment where both partners can express their perspectives and work towards healthier patterns of interaction. Many couples seek counselling when they feel stuck in repeating arguments or want support navigating major life changes. Our goal is to help couples understand each other better and strengthen their relationship.
Sessions
What happens in the first counselling session?
The first counselling session focuses on getting to know you and understanding what has brought you to counselling. Your counsellor will ask some questions about your current challenges, personal history, and what you hope to achieve through therapy. This session is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and see if the counselling approach feels comfortable for you. Together, you can begin identifying goals and possible strategies to support your wellbeing.
How long are counselling sessions?
Most counselling sessions run for approximately 50 minutes. This length allows enough time to explore important topics while keeping the conversation focused and productive. Some people attend counselling weekly at the beginning, while others prefer sessions every few weeks depending on their needs and goals. The frequency of sessions can be adjusted over time, and your counsellor can help you decide what schedule feels most helpful for your situation.
Location
Do you offer counselling in Perth’s northern suburbs?
Yes. Our counselling practice is located in Warwick, making it convenient for people living across Perth’s northern suburbs. Many of our clients travel from nearby areas such as Greenwood, Kingsley, Duncraig, Hamersley, Joondalup, and Hillarys. We aim to provide a welcoming and accessible space where individuals and couples can access professional counselling support close to home.
Do you offer online counselling sessions?
Yes, we offer online counselling sessions via secure video appointments. Online counselling allows clients to access support from the comfort of their own home and can be especially helpful for people with busy schedules or those who prefer remote sessions. Many clients find online counselling just as effective as in-person therapy. If you are unsure whether online counselling is right for you, we can discuss your preferences when booking.
